Overview

Under the Health & Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981, all employers are encouraged to ensure that a trained person or persons are available to carry out basic first-aid at work should any employees become injured or unwell whilst working.

Businesses normally choose to have a nominated person as a first-aider, and should also ensure that the first-aider is sufficiently trained and has the equipment and facilities that they need to maintain a safe workplace.

HSE approved first-aid certificates are valid for 3 years, so there comes a time when the certificate needs to be renewed. At the same time refresher first-aid training needs to be completed by the first-aider. This ensures that the skills and knowledge first-aiders at work are equipped with, are completely up-to-date with current medical care recommendations.

Who is it for?

Our 2 day First Aid at work Refresher course is intended for anyone that has previously completed a first-aid course, regardless of whether their certificate is still valid or not. It could be that a candidate was previously a first-aider at their old job, but didn't continue with the responsibility, or perhaps a current first-aider's certificate is due to expire.

Attending the first aid at work refresher course will validate the certificate holder's experience for a further 3 years.

What you'll learn

The First-Aid 2 day refresher course will remind attendees about managing first-aid incidents at work and advise of the most current first-aid techniques, including:

• Assessing the incident and situation
• Personal safety management at an incident
• What contents should an HSE approved first-aid kit include?
• First-Aid priorities
• Techniques for resuscitation
• Carrying out a primary assessment of a casualty
• Cardio – Pulmonary Resuscitation in accordance with UK Resuscitation Council guidelines 2005
• Understanding the chain of Survival
• How to manage an unconscious casualty
• How to manage circulatory disorders (such as haemophilia)
• Recommended treatment for burns, scalds, choking casualties, broken bones and fractures, and treating miscellaneous conditions such as diabetes, asthma, anaphylactic shock and epilepsy
• First Aid Legislation
• Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1988
• Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002
• Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995

Assessments

Attendees will be tested by a multiple choice assessment that recaps each part of first-aid training. The candidates will be required to answer a minimum of 15 questions correctly out of the 20 questions included in the assessment.
The course is practical in nature, and includes participation in demonstrations of first aid procedures carried out on the floor, so we recommend wearing suitable clothing that is comfortable, easy to move around in and won't be a problem if it gets a little dusty.

Accreditation & Certificates

Successful completion of the course and assessment leads to an HSE approved certificate, which is valid for 3 years.
