Essential Engineering Safety: The ECITB CCNSG Safety Passport

The Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB) was set up in 1991 and is answerable to the Department of Education (DoE). It is responsible for the development of the engineering construction workforce in Great Britain and that responsibility extends to the training, skills and qualifications needed for an engineer to work on a construction site in the UK.

The aim of the ECITB CCNSG Safety Passport Scheme is to ensure an industry standard level of training to ensure the health and safety of all those who work on construction sites. CCNSG Safety Passport training ensures a basic knowledge and understanding of health and safety so that, after a full site induction, all CCNSG Safety Passport holders can work on site safety; lowering the risk of on-site accidents and injury.

The CCNSG Safety Passport is a relatively new qualification, being launched in 2014. It replaced the Supervisor Course and can also be combined with the ACE qualification so any engineers working under the ACE scheme can attend a CCNSG course and have their ACE card and Safety Passport combined.

CCNSG Safety Passport training can only be provided by CCNSG Approved Training Providers who are required to complete a range of assessments and applications. Therefore, you can be assured that the safety training you receive is of the highest quality. In order for you to receive a valid Safety Passport, your training course must be conducted by an approved trainer.

CCNSG Safety Passport training teaches safe working practises for a range of on-site situations such as working at height, use of scaffolding and access equipment, site transportation and working with asbestos. The training also includes basic accident, fire and first aid training. Also covered are procedures for working with heavy machinery and procedures and controls for working with electricity and power isolation.

The ECITB CCNSG Safety Passport is a great training course for covering all bases in regard to health and safety training. There are other specific training courses which look at specific area more in-depth, but this course is an ideal starter point for those looking to work on construction sites. The Safety Passport training should be refreshed and renewed regularly and CCNSG renewal training is available for Safety passport and ACE card holders.
