When it comes to the question of - can I get a CSCS card with the SMSTS course - the answer is that the Site Management Safety Scheme qualification alone, isn’t enough for an individual to apply for a CSCS card. In order to obtain a CSCS card, you must complete a relevant NVQ of a high enough level for the particular card that you are applying for. Site managers require a CSCS Black Manager Card for their specific role.

Are they Scrapping CSCS Cards?

CSCS, which stands for the Construction Skills Certification Scheme, is changing. CSCS cards are proof of training and qualification; they allow you to work on construction sites. With a CSCS card, a worker is able to show their ability to oversee a certain job on a construction project.

The answer to this question is that the Construction Skills Certification Schemehas agreed to slowly withdraw any cards issued under Industry Accreditation. Beginning on the 1st January 2020, all CSCS cards renewed in this way will expire on 31st December 2024. The card will no longer be issued under Industry Accreditation as of the 30th June 2024. Taking the SMSTS course is one of the methods that will be required instead.

Can I be a Site Manager with an SMSTS course?

Site managers have one of the most important roles on a construction site. They oversee the management of on-site operations. If you want to become a site manager, then most organisations request that you have a CSCS Black Card and have completed the SMSTS course. With both of these qualifications, you will demonstrate that you’re knowledgeable, experienced and committed to be on-site in a managerial role.

What NVQ level is the SMSTS Course?

The answer is that the SMSTS course isn’t equivalent to a particular level of training. This is not a qualification required by law, but it is recommended and often demanded for site managers to complete this training. Ultimately, SMSTS is a brilliant introduction before an individual progresses to completing an NVQ and acquiring their CSCS black manager’s card.
