Buried Utilities are a major hazard to construction workers. Badly planned excavations can result not only in cable or pipe damage but also personal injuries, costly repairs and delays.
This hands-on course will equip you with the knowledge and practical skills you need to safely and correctly operate a RD400/4000 Cable Avoidance Tool (CAT) along with a Signal Generator (GENNY) when tracing underground service, giving you an excellent grounding in cable avoidance in the workplace.

Anyone regularly carrying out, or supervising excavation work.

What you'll learn

This course will cover areas such as:

• The requirements of the Regulations with respect to detecting and tracing underground services.
• Reasons for using locators
• Hazards arising from the use of cable avoidance tools and signal generators and precautions which should be observed.
• Identification of types of cable avoidance tools and signal generators implications of damage, handling and transporting of equipment
• Inspecting, calibration and testing of equipment
• The methods of safe use of pipe and cable location equipment, along with basic locating techniques
• Safe working practices
• Inspection of appropriate cable avoidance equipment
• Identify utility cables and safe use of cable avoidance equipment
• Safe use of signal generators
• Tracing of pipes and safe use of sondes
• Servicing and maintenance requirements


You will be assessed on your safe use of practical equipment.


Upon successfully passing the written assessment at the end of the course, you will be given a certificate of attendance, which is valid for three years.
