Covering the procedures and guidelines, this course is aimed at those who are either employed by local authorities, utilities companies or contractors and are required to carry out work on roads, highways or on public footpaths.

Focussing on Health & Safety legislation and responsibilities in practice, safe working practices and the reference documentation used within the Highways industry, on completion of the course, you will be able to safely carry out streetworks safely and effectively.

By law, at least one operative in any squad must have gained the required qualification in the aspect of the work being undertaken.

Those who carry out the manual excavation and reinstatement in footpaths and highways.

What you'll learn

The NRSWA Training for Operatives includes the following units:

• Unit 001- Locating & avoidance of underground services
• Unit 002- Signing, lighting & guarding
• Unit 003- Excavation in the highway. Specifications, techniques, road types, materials
• Unit 004- Reinstatement & compaction of backfill materials
• Unit 005- Reinstatement of non-bituminous sub-base & road-base materials
• Unit 006- Laying practices and reinstatement of cold lay bituminous materials. Specification & types of materials
• Unit 009- Reinstatement of modular surfaces & concrete footways
By the end of the course, you'll be able to:
• Carry out streetworks to the standards set down in the [Highways] Act
• Use hand and power tools for the purpose of such works, including portable traffic signal systems
• Read and understand site plans for the purpose of identifying underground/ overhead apparatus
• Use locating equipment for the purpose of detecting underground apparatus
• Set up a site to protect workers and members of the public

Required materials

Two passport photographs are necessary in order to complete registration. As the course is of a practical nature, you will require the following:

• Safety boots
• Overalls
• Gloves
• Goggles
• Ear defenders
• Waterproof clothing
• Fluorescent jacket


Assessments will be carried out by one of We Do Training's fully accredited, expert instructors.

Accreditation & Certificates

On successful completion of the course, you will be registered on the Street Works Qualifications Register.
